In 2024 Fall, I took Learning Media Design (05-691) and led a team of three to create LingoLink, a Duolingo-like extension for Spanish that integrates LLM capabilities to provide more after-school practice in line with classroom teaching, in collaboration with a local high school.
Working with Spanish classes at City of Bridges High School, our team (with Pragati Maheshwary and Eadin Wang) found a gap between what students learn in class and what they practice on their own. LingoLink connects the two with:
- Daily interactive notifications: quick multiple-choice vocabulary and grammar questions aligned with the current unit;
- Real-world challenges: weekly AI-simulated conversations based on authentic situations, which students can then try out in real life;
- Conversational AI practice: dialogue with an AI agent that gives immediate grammatical feedback and corrections.
We grounded the design in stakeholder interviews, focus groups, and contextual inquiries, then iterated through design probes (photovoice postcards), speed dating with storyboards, and Wizard-of-Oz prototypes. More details are on the project website.
